Theme for the Lesson Week: "Families of the Past"
Big Culture Lesson Description: The students will listen to and discuss a biography of Aileen Fisher who grew up in Iron River during the time of early settlement in Iron County. Fisher's poems are studied and learned to assist children in understanding her life. Continued use of Fisher's Poetry will help students understand how families use the environment.
Essential Questions:
  • Who was Aileen Fisher?
  • How did families live in Iron River years ago?
  • How was life different then from today?
Initiating Activities: A Folk Fair is held with demonstations of spinning, weaving, story telling, leather working, old-time music/singing, and ice-cream making. In class, students listen to the biography of Aileen Fisher, nationally-known poet and writer of children's literature, who grew up in Iron River. Students and teachers discuss the annual WIC Student Art Show and visited the Museum where there is a display of Fisher's poetry, books, and driftwood sculptures.

Student Activities: After listening to the biography of Aileen Fisher, students retell significant parts of her life. Students learn and recite one of the following poems to further understand her life. 1.Growing Up, 2.But Then, 3.In The Country.

Students complete an art project to show a stage/stages of growing up: 1. Time line of growth-birth to 6 years. 2. Losing a tooth. 3. What will I be/look like as a grownup. Next, students learn how families use the environment. From their own observations they share information about the characteristics of the environment during the four seasons, identify types of clothing people wear in different seasons of the year, and learn/recite one poem from each season. 1. Winter: a.Suddenly, b. December, c. Bears, d. Rain, e. Snowball Wind. 2. Spring: a. Time for Rabbits, b. Baby Chick, C. Spring Song, D. Knowing. 3. Summer: a. Fireflies, b. Butterfly, c.Windy Tree, d. Open House, e. Hayfield. 4. Fall: a. I like Fall, b. As Soon As It's Fall, c. Fall, d. Autumn Leaves.

The children create an appropriate piece of artwork for each season: 1. Collage snow scene, crayon resist 2. Painted spring scene, eggs in basket, baby chicks 3. Summer tree with swing 4.Torn paper leaves, tree.

Children learn season songs, movements in music class. Supplementary Fisher materials and film strips loaned from the Museum are read and viewed through the week.

Culminating Activities: Families, friends, and community view the children's art work which is part of the WIC Student Art Show. Children visit the Iron County Museum where they view the Aileen Fisher Exhibit and participate in three sectional presentations: Animal/bird search in the LeBlanc Wildlife Art Gallery, Making old-fasined dolls (clothespin, corncob, or stocking), Sing-along with basic fold dance movements. Children also have the opportunity to attend the Aileen Fisher Nature Workshop scheduled at the Museum in June.

Assessment: Given the simple biography, students will recount events from Aileen Fisher's life. Children will share their observations of Iron River's physical environment. From these observations, students will identify how familes use the environment in everyday living. Children will learn and recite 6 Fisher poems, draw pictures, and learn season songs.
Criteria for evaluating student projects/performances: Were the children able to recite poetry to their classmates? Did the pictures that the children drew and colored reflect seasonal changes?
